Finally, murmurings are beginning to happen about the Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II digital camera. We weren't sure if Panasonic was going to let its camera division die the way Olympus did. It didn't seem as likely with Panasonic as they also have a video division and they did clearly make a big effort with their recent Panasonic GH6 release.

We have no specifications for this camera. Only rumors that it will be announce early 2023.

We now have the leaked specifications of the Panasonic Lumix S5 II:

  • Finally, phase detection autofocus
  • 24 megapixel sensor
  • 14+ stops of dynamic range
  • IBIS
  • 6K 30P (4:2:0 10bit) and C4K 60P (4:2:2 10bit)
  • 3.68 million dot resolution OLED viewfinder
  • Dual native ISO (varies by mode)
  • Mechanical and electronic shutter (9 FPS and 30 FPS)
  • Full size HDMI (take that, Canon)
  • 740 grams
  • Battery grip option
  • Price similar to Sony A7 IV
  • Flip-out screen
There is an almost identical Panasonic Lumix S5 II X version that additionally includes all of the above and:
  • Apple ProRes
  • IP streaming

I was secretly hoping for the dynamic range boost found in the Panasonic GH6 to show up in this camera. I'm not seeing any mention of that, however.

From DP Review's review of the S5 II:

Our first impressions are that the AF tracking in stills mode is stickier than the Nikon Z6 II's but a touch behind its Canon and Sony rivals, whereas for video it's better behaved than all but the Sony.

A potential pitfall is that one of its key stills features – 30fps Raw capture – exhibits significantly more rolling shutter than its most direct rival. The Canon EOS R6 II can shoot at 40fps with a readout time of ~18ms: around 30% quicker than the roughly 25ms the S5 II takes to close its shutter.
