Likely because of the huge success of the Red Komodo, RED decided to make some iterative improvements and charge $4K more and now we have the Komodo-X.

Key specifications:
  • 19.9MP Super35 Global Shutter CMOS
  • Compact and lightweight body
  • Locking Canon RF lens mount
  • Up to 6K80p and 4K120p video
  • 12G-SDI, USB-C, 5-Pin Audio Ports
  • 6K Streaming via RED Connect License
  • Wireless control
  • 2.9" Touchscreen
  • $10,000
The real advantages over the original Komodo appear to be:
  • new sensor
  • double the speed of frame rates
  • expanded recording modes
  • native V-mount battery plate
  • assignable buttons
  • some better I/O
  • better for live streaming
  • better colors

I always got by with rolling shutter and I never thought it was that big of a deal. Even the ARRIs I've used have had rolling shutter. And I've used mirrorless cameras for passion projects that have lots of rolling shutter. But man, I miss my Komodo. There is something special about the motion cadence of a global shutter. I don't do a lot of sports or car works, but even for the limited fast panning and gimbal work that I did, it just had this special quality I miss now and can't unsee. But if you haven't been spoiled by it then you won't know what you're missing.

I like this new RED but I was hoping RED would keep venturing into the affordable-ish space. I hope the original Komodo won't be a one-off for them.
