DJI Osmo Pocket 4

The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 is out soon and this a camera we’ve been waiting for.  Having owned and loved the Pocket 3, I have to say that the launch of the Pocket 4 is bittersweet.  It is better, but not so much better we’d tell owners of the 3 to upgrade 4.  It’s an iterative improvement.  Better low light, dynamic range, and slow motion.  But in a lot of contexts the footage will look similar or the same.  I guess I was hoping for a bit more, enough to make owners of the 3 feel a strong desire to upgrade.  The 4 is objectively better but don’t feel you have to get it.  The 3 remains an amazing camera.

Key features:

  • 4K/240fps slow motion (this is double of the Pocket 3)
  • Updated 1-inch CMOS 50MP sensor with a claimed 14-stop of dynamic range
  • 10-Bit D-Log (The 3 has 10-Bit D-Log-M which is a less robust codec)
  • 107GB of internal storage
  • New hardware buttons
  • Better digital zooming
  • $499 (this is a steal)

If you can live with the wide focal length this might be the only camera you need for certain video purposes.

New Cameras Under Development by Panasonic

We’re hoping that this 25th anniversary product launch year for Panasonic will come with some impressive new cameras.

We’re seeing rumors float around about a Panasonic S5 III, S9 II, S1H II, and even a LX100 III.  We would love to see any and all of these.  Panasonic brought innovation and uniqueness to the camera market, especially on the video front.

However, we don’t confirmation of ANY of these rumors yet.

New Camera from Nikon

Nikon has registered a new N2324 camera. No one knows what this is yet (although many are hoping for a Z9 Mark II and some fear it’s an update to the Z30, a less popular offering).

We will keep on the watch for any new information about what this camera is.

New and Fast Telephoto Lenses Coming From Sigma

Three new patents (see: 1,2) have been issued from Sigma for a 300mm F2.8 lens, a 250mm F2 lens, and 200mm F1.8 lens.  These appear to be for the Sony E mount, at least initially.

We don’t have any other information at this time, and it’s not uncommon for patents to be filed for lenses that never get made.  But hopefully at least some of these lenses get made.  As a bonus, we hope that Sigma makes them significantly cheaper than first-party offerings and keeps the weight and size down as much as possible.

Brightin Star 24mm F6.3 Tiny Lens

I don’t know if we should get tired of all of these cheap but small aperture lens or happy to have so many affordable, small options.  I lean towards the latter.

We don’t have a price or release date for this lens yet, but it is full-frame, it would be reasonable to expect it to be available for the Sony E, Nikon Z, and L mounts.  We should also expect reasonable performance in the center and questionable edges.  F6.3 requires so much light that this lens is really limited.  Think of it as an expensive lens cap, maybe.  But we will be happy to be surprised.

For a little bit more money, you could buy a vintage 24mm F2.8 lens, but it obviously would not be as small.  And for more money yet you could a third-party autofocus 24mm F2.8 lens.

This leak comes courtesy a Weibo post.

New OM-3 Camera

We don’t want the micro-four-thirds format to die but we worry that it will.  Creating new, innovative cameras, especially in the video domain, could be a viable path forward for the format.  Instead, what we often see if a recycling of parts and producing a camera that really isn’t compelling or competitive with its peers.

Unfortunately, these early, unconfirmed rumors about the new OM-3 Camera sound as if it’s using the same sensor as a previous OM camera has some minor iterative improvements.  Let us hope that’s not the case.
